Inspired by Italy

David and Sybil Yurman have always had a love affair with Italy. Its light, art and architecture have inspired many of their designs and collections, including Renaissance. Launched in 1985, Renaissance is a cornerstone of David Yurman design—steeped in Cable and the rich palette of 14th-century paintings.

Influenced by their trips to Florence, Rome and the New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, David created the first Renaissance Cable bracelet for Sybil, his wife and creative partner. He twisted 50 feet of wire by hand, finishing the ends with caps of tourmalines and emeralds. The jewel tones evoked the brilliant pigments of Italian masterpieces from the Renaissance, so David and Sybil named it after this extraordinary era when culture, aesthetics and architecture were reborn.

Since Renaissance began as a token of love between David and Sybil, it’s only fitting that Novella draws inspiration from her engagement ring. “David gave me a domed ring with a soft patina and a baguette diamond,” recalls Sybil. “It had a boldness that felt modern.” Many of the new designs feature hand-brushed metal, creating a soft, sensuous play of light. Their emerald and baguette cuts also highlight precious stones of exceptional quality, clarity and size. Bezel settings and faceted chains echo the clean lines of the gems.

“In a way, we’re coming full circle,” she says. “It’s a celebration of what’s important to us—love, purity and continuing in the Classical tradition.”
